A visually striking and immersive Lunar New Year installation has transformed Crown Melbourne’s Atrium into a celebration of light, culture, and tradition, marking the arrival of the Year of the Horse. 

to captivate audiences locally, nationally, and internationally, the display designed produced and manufactured by MK Illumination Australia delivers a powerful sense of occasion within one of Australia’s most prestigious hospitality and entertainment destinations.

Light, animal and plant form intersect to create a uniquely crafted experience and in the design each detail was carefully considered to complement Crown’s rich architectural setting, while enhancing its reputation as a destination for elevated, joyful celebrations.

The activation was created to enchant guests and visitors of all ages - from families and tourists to hotel guests and seasonal shopper - while encouraging interaction, photography, and shared moments. Working closely with Crown’s vision, MK Illumination has delivered a large-scale installation that balances spectacle with cultural authenticity and emotional connection.

This project is especially meaningful for MK Illumination, reflecting our commitment to designing with purpose, scale, and a strong connection to community - creating experiences that resonate far beyond their physical form.

The structure incorporates low-carbon aluminium materials, and the illumination uses premium energy-efficient LED lighting, helping reduce electricity consumption while maintaining the highest visual quality. This ensures the installation delivers both environmental responsibility and long-term value.

Since installation just days ago, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors are naturally drawn to the display, pausing to admire the craftsmanship, capture photos, and immerse themselves in the festive atmosphere. Seeing guests interact with the installation exactly as envisioned is one of the most rewarding outcomes for the MK Illumination team.

At the heart of the concept is the symbolism of the Chinese zodiac, where each year is represented by an animal embodying specific cultural value. Celebrating the Year of the Horse—associated with strength, vitality, and progress—the installation was designed with adaptability in mind. The zodiac feature can be refreshed annually, ensuring longevity and sustainability, and transforming the structure into a long-term festive asset rather than a one-off installation.

Visually, the design embraces the traditional Lunar New Year palette of rich reds and golds—colours synonymous with prosperity, luck, and celebration. Delicate floral motifs inspired by the lotus and peony are woven into the patterns, adding cultural depth while reinforcing a sense of elegance and abundance. 

The result is a contemporary interpretation of tradition, perfectly aligned with the refined, luxury experience of Crown Melbourne.
